Situated just 8 km from Madikeri in Kodagu District, Karnataka, Abbey Falls plunges 70 feet over rocky terrain. Formed by the early reaches of the River Cauvery, the falls are deeply enveloped by private coffee and spice plantations.

A Thundering River Cascade Hidden Within Coorg's Coffee Estates
A Glimpse into History
Origins – British Era Discovery
Originally called Jessi Falls by the region's first British chaplain, it was named affectionately after his daughter. The heavy jungle foliage kept it largely inaccessible except to determined local explorers.
Evolution – Mr. Neravanda B. Nanaiah
Post-independence, the surrounding wild overgrown territories were bought by local planter Mr. Nanaiah. He single-handedly cleared the dense jungle, paving agricultural paths that eventually opened the falls to widespread tourism.
Modern Era – Hanging Bridge Addition
Recognizing its booming tourism potential, authorities constructed a sturdy hanging bridge directly opposite the cascade. This gave tourists a spectacular frontal vantage point without precarious rock climbing.
Significance
The falls are agriculturally vital as the misty spray creates a micro-climate heavily favoring the surrounding cardamom, pepper vines, and robusta coffee. The water subsequently merges downstream feeding the critical Cauvery river basin.
Festivals & Events
Kaveri Sankramana (October)
Timed heavily with the peak post-monsoon river expansion. Devotees heading to nearby Talakaveri (the river's origin) frequently stop at Abbey Falls to witness the river at its massive seasonal crest.
Madikeri Dasara (October)
During the regional Dasara festivities, tourist footfall peaks sharply. The cool misty weather during this month naturally enhances the vibrant green canopy surrounding the rushing waters.
Did You Know?
Strictly swimming is entirely prohibited at the falls. The underlying rocks harbor treacherous hidden undercurrents and severe natural sinkholes that have claimed careless swimmers historically.
